Special Services of Headstart Programs
Headstart programs in Ottawa have received funding for special programs including:
Speech and Language Assessments and Therapy
Through a purchase-of-service agreement with the Children's Hospital of Eastern
Ontario, Headstart programs provide families with an opportunity to have their
children assessed for speech and language problems. The assessments are done on-site
at the schools, increasing access to much needed services. Headstart is expanding
its Speech and Language program to Francophone Headstart families. In addition,
Headstart is piloting a direct therapy program for Speech and Language development
at the Children's Aid Society Nursery School in conjunction with First Words.
Right Start
Headstart received funding through the National Child Benefits program to implement
Right Start, an early numeracy initiative for preschool children. Right Start
includes a Training of Trainers component, which would allow Headstart to expand
this program to OCHAP's Associate Members.
Book Bag Program
With funding from the National Child Benefits program, Headstart will implement
the Book Bag Program, which will include special curriculum to promote early literacy
among preschool children.
