Mission and Philosophy

It is the philosophy of the Queensway Preschool to recognize that each child is unique, therefore the program focuses on the individual needs and abilities of each child, knowing that early childhood should be a time of fun, warmth, security, exploration and discovery.

Target Population

2 ½ to 5 years old (end of Senior Kindergarten year)

Staffing

All teachers have their Early Childhood Education Diploma. Many have additional education and experience.

Facilities

Queensway Preschool is situated within the Parkdale United Church, at the corner of Gladstone Avenue and Parkdale Avenue in Ottawa,

Transportation

Transportation is provided for children who live within designated boundaries: Bronson Avenue, Island Park Drive, the Ottawa River and Carling Avenue [refer to map].

Days and Hours of Operation

  • Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. or 1:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.
  • Lunchtime Program (for Kindergarten students): Monday through Friday 11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. September to June.

Maximum Number of Children

32 children (16 in the morning program and 16 in the afternoon program).

Services for Children

The Queensway Preschool program is designed to promote active learning whereby children plan their mornings and make decisions independently. The staff offers a warm, learning environment with materials and activities which encourage self-esteem, as well as cognitive, social, emotional and physical development. There is outdoor play in our well-equipped playground, as well as regular trips and walks. The school also has the services of a speech pathologist.

Services for Parents

The Preschool strives toward developing a positive and cooperative working relationship with the parents, through a Parents' Groups, home visits and an open invitation to be a parent volunteer in the program. The Parents' Group is a support group for parents with children in the program. A variety of topics are chosen by the parents for discussion. Transportation and babysitting are provided.

Queensway Preschool is owned and managed by Queensway Social Action Group.
